How We Got Here
Headlines have to be bold and eye-catching by nature, so that’s what we did. But behind the headline is over 20 years of cloud experience, primarily with AWS from its very early days to the all-encompassing ecosystem it has become. We’ve used Google Cloud, Azure, and dabbled with many others. AWS has been the mainstay of our business as it’s grown from 10 engineers in a very compact office to nearly 100 as we hit our 10th anniversary.
We started to hear whispers, hushed voices suggesting a different way, less fraught, more IKEA. Buy what you need, when you need it. Instantly available, in multiple regions and performant enough to make it a real contender. We dipped our toes and, before very long, had launched into the clouds.
Appliscales’ founders met for the first time in 2012 while working on a green field advertising project. Agonising over how much hardware was required to support the rather optimistic (one word for it) forecasts from our sales team. Spending millions of dollars on hardware six to eight months in advance of a release. Crossing your fingers that the data centres would have capacity, that no delays would occur in delivery or provisioning and that you would actually utilise the machines when they were live.
